One of the most important things that the average Racing Pigeon breeder has to know is how to band the birds properly. It’s a very simple process, but it needs to be done precisely right or it won’t work right.

But what is banding? For the racing pigeon neophytes out there, banding is the process of putting an identification ring on a pigeon’s leg. This ring will allow the owner, as well as the local club members, to identify their pigeons.

As I said earlier, banding is a fairly easy process, but it needs to be done at precisely the right time.

Band a pigeon too early, and the band will just slip off the pigeon’s leg. But band the pigeon too late, and the ring won’t fit through the pigeon’s foot.

But you don’t need to worry, because we have the perfect solution for you.

In this video, you will be given an in depth look to banding pigeons, and when you should do it. We have also provided comparisons of leg size between pigeons of different ages, to help you decide when to band them.

Now that you have learned to breed your own racing pigeons, the next thing you need to learn is how to train them. This requires a little bit of work, but if you know what you’re doing, this should be a cinch.

As we all know, pigeons have a great sense of direction. Most of the time, they’ll be able to get home on their own without any training. The challenge is making them take the shortest time possible in finding their way home.

Pigeon racing has had a very colorful history, dating to as far back as 220 AD. The pigeon race distances vary from 100 to 1000 kilometers, so speed and endurance is necessary in a racing pigeon.

This video will show you some effective ways of training your pigeon for races. The pigeons are taken a considerable distance from their homes, and released by their owners and have them find their way back in the shortest time possible.

You can also choose to just buy a custom-built loft, or have someone build it for you, but where’s the fun in that? Building your own pigeon loft can help you become closer to the project, and help foster some feeling of attachment to your pigeons.

But how do we begin building the loft? And how much effort do we have to put into building it?

In this video, Craig Sorenson shows us how to build a small loft for your homing pigeons. Watching him do it makes it seem as if it’s really easy to build a loft for the little critters, so hopefully it will give you enough confidence to give it a try.

Whenever we hear the words “pigeon facts” we sometimes think that we know everything that we need to know about pigeons. We assume to know particulars such as they are intelligent, they can be used in racing, they would only have one partner for the rest of their lives, etc. How about if we travel back in time? Would this help us understand some deeper facts about these great birds? One thing is for sure, pigeons are made not just to become ordinary pets. They were created for bigger duties and tasks that even the most stone-hearted human may find hard to fulfil. In line with the magnitude of their abilities, they are worth hundreds and thousands of money that only the pigeon fanciers would go after. Read on the following pigeon facts and discover yourself why these fast-flying birds deserve their recognition.

Pigeon Facts – Their Astounding Functions!

Before the invention of emails and other means of communication in the early days, pigeons have shown their extraordinary skills which were unmatched by other animals. Some of the functions for assistance which they have done, and could be capable of doing even until now, are as follows:

Messengers

- Pigeons carry messages between Syria and Egypt in as early as 5th Century B.C. It was, during that time, the only means of communication.

- In the early age of Olympic Games, pigeons are used to carry results of sport occasions. They serve the same purpose in England after every soccer game.

- During the times of war, they carry messages which saved thousands of human lives.

Lifesavers

- Pigeons can be trained in order to save human lives.

- Project Sea Hunt, an experiment that made use of three pigeons to conduct search and rescue in open water, proved that these birds have extraordinary skills. The pigeons are found to be 93 percent accurate of finding floating objects at sea.

Pigeon-gram Air Mail

- In 1896, the sinking of a New Zealand-owned steamship triggered the organization of the first pigeon air-mail service. Messages were sent in less than 2 hours. During that time, the pigeon-gram stamp cost 20 cents each and must be paid before the bird can be discharged.

Can you just imagine how rich you could be if you were the owner of these birds during those times of needs? With their exceptional intelligence, these pigeon facts pertaining to their use are very doable!

Pigeon Facts – How did they amazingly serve people’s needs?

Individuals who realized the unbelievable capabilities of these wonder birds did take advantage of them. Such enterprises eventually fulfilled their needs in terms of money.

They hasten the means of communication.

During the 1800s, pigeons were used by the Rothschild family to move messages to and fro their financial houses. Since they were able to gather essential information in a quicker manner than others, they were able to elevate their wealth and maintain it until these days.

They are worth thousands of dollars.

This statement is true especially for racing pigeons. Many people these days sell racing pigeons to those individuals who are pigeon racing addicts. These are people who don’t care how much money it would cost them for buying as long as they win the race. Currently, the world’s most expensive race pigeon was bought for $328,000 by a Chinese shipbuilding tycoon.

Given the two situations above, it’s either you own pigeons and use them in your business or you are to buy a pigeon as your personal champion. With a large amount of money involved in utilizing these birds, the pigeon facts mentioned above may grow further as time goes by.

Pigeon Facts – World’s Renowned Heroes

Wars were not just fought by men and machines. They were fought and won by pigeons as well! With their valour, these faithful-to-duty birds just deserve the awards and the commemoration given to them.

Cher Ami

- French words which mean “dear friend”

- He was given by British pigeon enthusiasts to the US Army Signal Corps.

- He carried an important message which saved the lives of 200 men.

- Although he was shot in the chest and leg (from where the message was placed), he managed to soar higher beyond the range of the bullets.

- He was awarded with one of the French’s great awards – Croix de Guerre

G.I. Joe

- World War 2 hero

- He carried a message that stopped the Allied forces from bombarding the village which has thousands of citizens. The planes were already on the runway when G.I. Joe delivered the message saving the lives of many.

- He was given the Dickin Medal in November 1946 for his heroic deed.

These are real stories of two birds which showed their gallantry during two separate war eras. Their stories are examples of what you can tell your kids without any guilt of telling a “make up” tale. Knowing these heroic pigeon facts enables the readers to give respect to every pigeon or bird or even other animals for their almost-human thinking and sincerity.

Pigeon Facts – Their Religious Meanings

Pigeons are not just war heroes they are also respected icons on certain world religions. Some beliefs on pigeons are listed below:

Older Sikhs perform rites in feeding pigeons to honour their high priest and warrior Guru Govind Singh – the last guru of Sikh faith.

Sikhs believed that if they have fed pigeons while they live, they will not be hungry once they have reincarnated.

Some religious groups in India feed birds, especially pigeons, because they believe these birds are the souls of their dead loved ones.

In Christianity, pigeon symbolizes peace. It also symbolizes the Third Person in the Holy Trinity which is the Holy Spirit.

Whether those are pigeon facts or religious beliefs, one thing is true – pigeons are valued and cherished!

Feeding Nutrients – racing pigeons are a lot like athletes that require proper diet in order for them to be good at what they do. Make sure you give your birds the right kind of food to make them fit for racing.

Start your birds with corn for starters

Coming into the sixth week, replace the corn with two separate daily meals. Use light rations during the day and make sure you give them a nice helping of corn during evening meals. This is crucial in making sure that they build up muscles the right way.

Stick to the feeding routine especially during off seasons of racing.

Training Schedule – timing is everything when it comes to training your voyageurs. The best time to teach them how to race is during mornings. Also, always be critical of the weather condition on training days. Make sure that clear skies and no gusty winds are always part of your consideration in picking a day to train.

Do Not Rush the Birds – remember that there are no short-cuts in pigeon racing. Give your birds the chance to mature and never subject them to too much training and exercise. Like all athletes, they too can be burnt out and have their ability decreased to deliver in actual game times.

Fist Course is Paramount – the primary lesson the birds ought to know about is trapping. Observe your birds and make sure they know how to come back to their loft. On the first day of training, watch out for those birds that made it back last and teach them to be the faster on the next day.

Racing Pigeons – The Secret Formula for Winning

Racing pigeons is a very competitive sport and an exhilarating one at that. Experts in this activity have their own ways of producing champions and more often than not, it has something to do with the birds’ breed. Yet, there are fool-proof ways to make your chances of winning races a whole lot better:

Less is Really More – it will do you good if you choose to maintain a small group of pigeons. This way, you get to have better distribution of your time in training and feeding your family of birds. A huge flock would almost certainly guarantee that some birds may be neglected.

Give Importance to Health- this makes a lot sense because a bird that is not fit cannot be expected to win races. Remember, they are not just regular pigeons – they are athletes. They need the proper nutrition in order to be champions.

Racing Preparation – during race season, make sure your racers are hydrated with a lot of electrolytes. They use up a lot of fluids whenever they fly and you have the responsibility to replenish it.

Hygiene is Key – cleanliness of the pigeons and their loft along with the things they use for feeding is imperative. Obviously, a sloppy cage and feeders will trigger bacteria build-up that can put the birds’ health in jeopardy. Always make it a habit to get rid of droppings and clean their feeders.

These tips may come as a surprise for most people because of their simplicity. Yet, there are many racers out there who are overly focused in winning and neglect these very important parts of the bargain. The point is if you want to win, you must not be reluctant to get your hands dirty.

Maintenance is a huge part of pigeon racing and it is impossible to do without it.

Simple Training Tips for Racing Pigeons

Training racing pigeons can be a pill. Here are some quick guides to avoid frustration during the birds’ training:

Loft Placement – choose a place where you will put the birds’ loft. You want it in a spot where the end of the race would likely be situated.

Reward System – during training for trapping, put treats on the trap so the birds will be enticed to go there until they get used to the idea. You can also use this technique to teach them to get in a release basket.

Distance Adjustment – gradually increase the distance between the place of release and the loft. This will slowly make the bird capable of flying long distances.

The Thrill of Racing Pigeons

Since you will begin the sport by actually overseeing every detail of the activity, the bonuses you get can be priceless. From breeding, growing and training the birds, all of these aspects boil down to that prideful moment when the birds start becoming racing pigeons.

Acquiring and maintaining racing pigeons is neither simple nor easy process. One must not be plain excited because excitement is a sudden feeling which may be lost along the way when everything’s not happening the way we want it to be. Newbie in raising pigeons must be really an enthusiast and shows great passion to birds specifically on breeding racing pigeons.

6 Steps to Breed Racing Pigeons Successfully

Racing Pigeon

Racing is an exact example of a challenge. And one must have his own secrets to win or be humiliated if lost. Check on the following steps which would help you breed the best among the best of champions.

1. Choose the breed that wins.

Since you want to join in racing, your obvious purpose is to win. Your pigeon must know how to come home after the race, it must be capable of coming back home and must have interest of getting back home.

2. Choose the racing breed.

An apple won’t produce a strawberry. What does it mean? It means if you do not have any pigeons with racing gene, you would never produce it whatever kind of breeding you do. So you better get it for a chance of winning the race.

3. Test your pigeons patiently.

Don’t rely with one result but when you see it on the third time, then you’ve got to pay attention to it. So if you didn’t see valuable results after placing at least 10 of their babies in tests, you’ve got to cull your breeders.

4. Choose the best.

If you started to breed for 200, then focus to the top 2. That’s really choosing the best or to give allowance, you may consider until 10. Culling for more than this ratio will not get you successful.

5. Strengthening of genetic contribution.

Inbreeding increases the genetic contribution of your chosen breeders. It provides more predictability because you narrow the gene pool. It also lessens variability on their babies.

6. Outcrossing.

With this process, you introduce a new bloodline into your flock which would enhance their qualities.

Those steps are very challenging and involve a lot of patience and perseverance. After all, that’s all that’s necessary when you want to achieve the best of racing pigeons.

Tips on Taking Care of Racing Pigeons

The word ‘race’ can be equated to ‘exhaustion’, which does not only apply to humans but to pigeons as well. Take note of the following caring tips that you should apply to your birds after the race.

·

Pigeon Racing

After the race, wash your pigeon’s feet with warm water as well as their feathers. By washing or cleaning them, you’ll be able to wipe out the germs they could have acquired from the other pigeons that joined the race.

· If the race was a long one, your birds would definitely need to feed, particularly in the morning as they arrived and then main feed should follow in the evening.

· Do not forget that pigeons need to rest after the race. Have them relax for at least 1 ½ days (36 hours) once the race is done. This way their muscles recover and gain full potency which are essential for the next training and race schedule.

Racing pigeons have their own distinctive muscle strengths in order to endure the challenge of the race so their owners must always remember how to take care of them properly.

Top 3 Nutrients Racing Pigeons Need

Since it involves energy in order to fly, pigeons must be regularly checked and monitored if they are getting the right nutrient at the right amount in order to soar smoothly.

· Carbohydrates

For the first few minutes of their flying, race pigeons would not last unless they’ve got sufficient carbohydrates. They mostly need feed with loads of carbohydrates if they are to race for short distances.

· Fats

Fats store energy while it’s not in use. When it comes to racing, carbohydrates would be consumed immediately so fats are necessary so that for the next few distances, your pigeons still have energy to use. When it’s a long distance race, include feeds with fat contents.

· Protein

We all know that protein does a lot of wonders when it comes to maintaining and repairing muscles but it does not stop there. It also improves fertility and hatchability which are very helpful in breeding. The known ideal mix of protein in feeds is 18% at most. Going beyond this mixture does not show any drastic development, although there’s no negative implications have been seen as well.

Responsibility is one major concern when it comes to maintaining racing pigeons that’s why it must be taken seriously, with full attention and great passion.

Everything started as far back as the year 1872 when Henri Janssen, the founder of Janssen family of voyageurs was born. He founded one of the first fancier organizations in Arendonk and was already at the top of his game during the years between 1908 and 1914. With his top voyageur named “Het Blautje” whose got twenty one wins under its belt, Henri was already winning bicycles from the races he joined.

When Henri married, he encouraged the whole family – including the children – to take part on his hobby that when Henri passed away in 1947, the children carried on with their father’s hobby of building their own family of pigeons. To this day, people who might think that they have figured out what the process of breeding the Janssens used will still remain a dream. This is because the actual procedures for breeding were not disclosed by the Janssen brothers. They simply chose not to tell anything to anyone at all. The soft plumage, the reds, yellows and purples and how to achieve all these were never shared by the brothers which made the Janssen pigeons one of a kind.

Buy Janssen Racing Pigeons for Sale or Make Your Own?

Janssen Racing Pigeon

The secret to breeding these wonderful birds were not shared, so suffice it to say that reproducing the same fantastic family of pigeons is impossible. The Janssen brothers though were very modest in saying that part of what they have achieved had something to do with luck – a lot of it – the achievement that the Janssen brothers reached is obviously is a product of luck they created themselves. For over seventy five years their pigeons have already won numerous top prizes in races and they never advertised. The influx of fame they are receiving is merely due to the race results they have grasped.

Although the exact methods of breeding of a Janssen pigeon were not shared, the Janssen brothers give away useful and practical advice for starting fanciers around the world to follow. The first on their list of advice is to make sure to prepare a loft that is dry and that there is an abundant supply of fresh air. They also strongly suggest for any budding fancier to have a lot of patience and do everything in a specified schedule; there are simply no short-cuts and champions cannot be bred overnight. Lastly, the biggest mistake that any breeder can do is to force things out; this defeats the purpose of being patient and dedicated to the whole process.

The Janssens have been doing what they do for a very long time now. It practically took them a lifetime to perfect their strategies and procedures; there is simply no excuse that anyone might think that they can cut the process in a shorter period of time and expect the same excellent results.

Janssen Racing Pigeons for Sale Both Online and Not

Not that there’s a problem with this; what is important is for the buyers to gain as much information about the seller before the purchase is made.

Janssen pigeons are very famous and it is quite easy for just anyone to cling on to that fame and earn from it. The Janssens had a very limited technology when they started breeding their pigeons; our modern world gives us endless means to ensure a worthy bargain.
Before “Racing Pigeons for Sale” Signs Were Put Up

Pigeons have been a long part of history before they were trained to be racing pigeons for sale in today’s modern times. Their heritage goes as far back as four thousand years ago when their main purpose was to deliver messages – like the ones one must have seen in old movies one time or another. One of the oldest record in history about pigeons can be seen way back to 1350 B.C. which displays a Bas-relief from Egypt depicting pigeons being freed from cages.

During the golden age of Greece – in the Olympics – pigeons were also used to send and deliver messages about the events going on around the surrounding cities. Because pigeons were agile and possess the ability to take long flights continuously through practically all kinds of weather conditions, they were also tasked to carry out and deliver important information such as news and quotations of the stock exchange. In all these applications, these birds proved to be very efficient in completing their tasks.

In this time of history, even though these birds were famous for their speed and capacity to deliver messages swiftly, people in this era knew very less about the procedures of breeding them. As time went on and as the sport of pigeon racing slowly progress, breeding and training racing pigeons for sale also gradually became popular.

The Contemporary Racing Pigeons and Modern Racing Pigeons for Sale

From the humble beginnings of being merely messengers, the racing pigeons for sale are now being bred to be athletes in their own right. The sport of pigeon racing can be regarded as something that was bound to happen because of the birds’ innate capabilities of speed and endurance. The pigeons being bred or trained cannot be compared to the ones people see in parks. These voyageurs – as fanciers would call them – are kept healthy and clean all the time; they are given special attention to make sure they are fit to win races or produce hatchlings that will become future champions.

Pigeon racing is likewise a sport anyone can join. People from different walks of life can choose to start competing, train and breed their own birds or buy racing pigeons for sale. Some might think of it as a simple hobby just let time pass; the point is, whether someone who goes into racing voyageurs is from the working class or a millionaire, it really depends on how seriously – or not- would you take the activity. For beginners though, who are more keen on purchasing racing pigeons; it is imperative to get hold of a few practical tips to avoid wasting money.

Racing Pigeons for Sale – What to Look for in a Bird

For Sale Racing Pigeons

Like any bargain anyone would ever make, the buyer should always get hold of an ample amount of information about the item he or she is going to buy. In the case of purchasing a racing pigeons for sale or trained racing pigeon, one must know what to look for in an actual racing pigeon before closing the deal. Make sure you do not make a “bad purchase”, which would mean you, buying a bird that is not fit to race or breed; if this happens, you are sure to end up spending more than actually enjoying the sport which will defeat the purpose of the first purchase right off the bat.

To make sure you do not make mistakes in purchasing and be discouraged from the start of beginning a new hobby, keep in mind one very practical tip: you cannot be certain of a good purchase unless you physically examine the goods.

The first thing you need to be critical about is the pigeon’s physical attributes. Hold the bird in your hand and assess whether it passes the criteria of having a good wing and a balanced body type. Now, winners come in different sizes and shapes, so, it does not automatically mean that a huge bird boast a higher endurance level or a smaller bird can go faster; what you want to look for is a bird that is generally healthy.

Once you are satisfied with the physical being of the pigeon, you can then turn your attention to its physiological attributes. Ask the merchant if the bird you’re buying came from a reputable breed. However, a champion’s offspring does not guarantee that the hatchling is sure to be a winner. Only during race time will you know its true capabilities. But, again, it never hurts to buy a bird that already has a history of winning races.

Lastly, psychological attributes of the bird is also a very important consideration. In the event that the pigeon you purchased displays a good attitude in racing, then it can only mean that you are doing the right thing. At this point, whether the pigeon wins or not depends heavily on your care of the voyageur and no longer in the hands of the merchant you bought it from. Take care of the bird well ad it will surely win races or produce good breeds.

The bottom line is that purchasing pigeons for racing is not as simple as it may seem. Apart from the fact that you would have to invest money, it will also take a great amount of dedication and patience from your part. So, when you think about it, the biggest step you would have to do before anything else is to ask yourself if you are TRULY ready for the responsibility that comes after buying some racing pigeons for sale.
